Mulan
Earlier this month Disney Plus released Premier Access to Mulan, a live-action retelling of the 1998 film. To watch Mulan Disney Plus subscribers had to pay the $29.99 fee to gain early access to the film, which will release on the streaming service later this year. This method was introduced to the streaming service after the delay of the film, which was originally supposed to open in theaters back in March. I am unsure if Disney plans to use the release method again in the future, or if this was a one-time occurrence caused by the pandemic.
I had the opportunity to watch Mulan and thought I would share my review of the film( Don't worry, there won't be any spoilers). Please keep in mind I am no film critic, and I would never claim to be. I am just simply sharing my thoughts on the film. I enjoyed it! Now let me clear and explain that going into the film, I knew it would be nothing like the original and I was okay with that. To be honest, if I wanted an exact copy I would have just watched the cartoon again!
I found the changes that were made to be interesting, and I feel that they enhanced the story. I am no expert on Chinese culture or history, but from my understanding, there was some effort put into being more respectful to Chinese heritage, and if that is the truth I commend Disney for trying to make those changes. Lastly, I want to point out the cinematography. This was by far my favorite part of this film. Many of the images captured throughout this film were breathtaking beautiful shots. I was constantly blown away by the imagery in this movie.
So, long story short, If you are on the fence about viewing Mulan I say: give it a shot! I feel that if you go into the movie with an open mind, you might be presently surprised. And if it helps, listen to "True to Your Heart" right after the movie ends! I know that worked for me!
