How to Survive College Online
Many college students across the country have just completed a spring semester like no other. Many of you were shocked when you found out that you would be getting an extended spring break. But what followed the elation of an extra week away from school, was the horrors of online studies. Although I graduated from school just before the Coronavirus rocked the United States, I am extremely familiar with online classes. During two semesters of the seven that I spent in college, I participated in internships that prohibited me from in-person instruction. So had I been in school when the Coronavirus hit (I was supposed to be, I just graduated early) I would have been an old pro at taking online classes. Since I've recently learned that some colleges and universities either won't be returning to in-person classes or will be offering hybrid learning, I thought I would share some of my knowledge.
1
Buy your textbooks and do the readings.- I know for some of you this tip may be a given, but for others being able to go class and listen to the lecture is enough to earn a passing grade. Unfortunately for online courses, you are going to have to put in some extra work. But It'll be worth it when you pass the class in the end!
2
Keep a detailed planner.- This tip may also sound redundant and I know a lot of college students keep a planner for in-person instruction, but I promise keeping a planner for an online course is crucial. This will keep you from being surprised about important assignments and exams.
3
Pick a place to work where you can be productive.- This tip is probably the most crucial. When I first began online courses I didn't understand why I wasn't retaining any information. Then I realized that it was because I was trying to complete my work while laying in bed while I half paid attention and half looked at my phone. Being successful in an online class requires the same amount of effort as an in-person class. You have to sit up and pay attention, and leave the phone in the other room!
4
Email your professors.- This is a difficult and strange time for everyone, and professors understand that! So there is no reason for you to feel like you can't reach out to your professor if you need extra help. Just think of it as stopping by their office hours!
5
Don't be too hard on yourself.- Again, this is a difficult and strange time for everyone. No one expects you to handle it perfectly. Perfection doesn't exist. Just try your best and keep your head up!
