Confessions of a 6-Year-Old Drama Queen

When I was a small child, I was a conundrum. I was a happy child, yet I could burst into tears at the drop of a hat. I was painfully shy, while simultaneously wanting to be the center of attention. I had natural leadership skills (I was bossy), but let other people walk all over me. My parents had a lot on their plates with me, even though I was well behaved.

In the spring of 2004, my life changed forever. Not really, but one of my favorite childhood movie was released. Confessions of a Teenaged Drama Queen hit theaters in February of that year and I had never felt more seen... even though I was only in elementary school.

This film follows Mary "Lola" Step, a high-school student and aspiring actress, as her family moves from New York to New Jersey. A move that Lola sees as the end of the world until she meets her new best friend, develops a crush and gets involved in her new school's production of Pygmalion.

Up until the release of this movie, I thought my tendency to overreact was a trait that I alone struggled with (I clearly wasn't a very observant child). Seeing Lola being unashamed of her drama queen tendencies made me not only feel better about the whirlwind of emotions I felt daily but helped me embrace them! It didn't hurt that I already idolized Lindsay Lohan of Freaky Friday and Parent Trap fame (RIP to Lindsay's early 2000's career).

Confessions was everything six-year-old Tierney needed it to be. It was funny, the characters had a great fashion sense (for 2004), and it showed me that I was perfectly fine just the way that I was! There was also an awesome musical number at the end that I definitely learned all the moves too! What more could you want in a movie!?!
